Autumn can be a gloomy time of year. So why not let us cheer you up with the inspiring tale of one of the most powerful women in British history?
Townsend Productions present We Are The Lions Mr Manager by Neil Gore .
It tracks the story of Jayaben Desai – a leader of one of the most influential strikes in women’s history.
The play illustrates Jayaben’s fight for dignity in the workplace, during the Grunwick Film Processing Factory Strike of 1976-78. Jayaben was one of many newly arrived Gururati workers from East Africa. She took on unfair bosses in a backstreet London factory in what was to become one of the longest and most important industrial disputes in British history.
Led by Asian women, the Grunwick strike challenged stereotypes, changed the face of white, male trade unions and inspired others to speak out against injustice. The women became known as the “strikers in saris” and their fight for fair treatment was supported by thousands of trade unionists and campaigners, as more than 20,000 people joined them at the picket lines on one of the mass pickets.
Jayaben was just four foot ten inches tall. A mother-of-two, she defiantly led the first walk-out in protest against the humiliation she and other women employees felt at the Grunwick factory.
As she left, the manager shouted at Jayaben and her colleagues to “stop chattering like monkeys in a zoo”, and Jayaben replied: “What you are running here is not a factory, it is a zoo. But in a zoo there are many types of animals. Some are monkeys who dance on your finger-tips, others are lions who can bite your head off. We are the lions, Mr. Manager!”
