Mayor and James (autumn 2021) – A riot of music and humour

How much have you missed LIVE music over the past year and a half? A LOT we are guessing. We hope to help with that!

Musicians Simon Mayor and Hilary James (James&Mayor) have been described by a Guardian reviewer as; a witty and captivating mix of folk, blues, swing and classical showstoppers, spiced with a unique brand of off-beat humour.’  We couldn’t agree more.

The pair have toured across Britain from Shetland to Sark, and over the globe from Vancouver to Singapore, entertaining locals with their special blend of dazzling musicianship.

Their performance is wonderfully varied with tunes to suit every taste, from evocative Irish ballads to the classical music of Handel. But it doesn’t stop there. This dynamic and adventurous duo even encourage audience participation to sing some of their own notoriously funny songs. Their entire show is bound together with wry humour and an informal stage manner that ensures everyone feels part of the fun.

Hilary James’ ‘elegant singing’ has received huge acclaim. She’s famed too for an unlikely taste in bass instruments (she could turn up with her giant mandobass or slimline semi-acoustic double bass), accompanying Simon on guitar on anything from Vivaldi to bluegrass and even managing a step dance if ‘the wind is in the right direction’.

Simon Mayor started out as a guitarist and fiddler, but his current position as one of the world’s foremost mandolinists (and composer for the instrument) has led to an ever increasing number of invitations to play and teach at festivals and conventions. Since 1990, his Mandolin Albums have been applauded in Celtic and classical circles alike.
