New Dates for Standing in Line
A story of the Great War told in songs, readings and images
by Lester Simpson, Nigel Corbett and Mike Bettison.
A moving and poignant production about the effects of war will be touring the north again this autumn.
Standing in Line was originally written by Lester Simpson to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War. Simpson’s great uncle Albert Scrimshaw died at Passendale leaving behind a widow Annie, who lived in Derbyshire until her death in the 1970’s.
By the end of the Great War there were few in the country who remained unaffected by the troubles. Children grew up in the shadow of battle, their fathers either absent or lost. Mothers and wives were left wondering about the young men who never made it back from the trenches and those who did return were forever marred by the experience.
Lester Simpson uses a clever mix of music and poetry to reveal his great uncle’s story.
Here is what a promoter with Cheshire Rural Touring Arts said about the performance;
Standing in Line exceeded my expectations by quite a distance. It was a beautifully produced and moving production. The narration, music and singing were all first class and the staging of the production worked really well with the high quality images on the back projected screen and well balanced sound. The three guys received a long standing ovation at the end of the performance with two thirds of the audience on their feet. Lester, Nigel and Mike were a pleasure to have around and we would definitely have them back if they come up with another show.
