opening new doors to the arts

Joan Littlewood was an inspirational theatre director who devoted her life to community and political theatre. We are putting together a play about her life.

Joan and Jimmy

“I really do believe in the community,” said theatre director Joan Littlewood.

And so do we.

So we decided to put together a full length play about the life of this fascinating woman entitled ‘Joan and Jimmy’.

Known as the ‘Mother of Modern Theatre’, Littlewood’s work was inspirational – especially for organisations like ours.

She devoted her life to community and political theatre and made it her mission to make theatre more accessible to the people of the north in the 1950’s and 60’s.

Littlewood is famously quoted as saying: “I really do believe in the genius in every person. And I’ve heard that greatness come out of them, that great thing which is in people.”

So you can see why we admire her so much…..

Our production, will tell the story of her life and that of her one time husband and partner Ewan MacColl (aka Jimmy Miller) covering the early days of Theatre Workshop; from Kendal in 1945 to Stratford East in 1952.

The play will be written by Jim Woodland and directed by Mike Bettison.

The show will appear at the following dates and venues;
